“We believe teaching is a force for change in the world and can change the world for the better. And so we really start from the standpoint that your role as a teacher is to get your students to look at the world, understand it, and decide what they’d like to make better, and give them the tools to go out and take action.”
— Dr. Neil Shanks
- Dr. Trena Wilkerson, professor of mathematics education and former high school math teacher
- Ivy and Leslie, both middle grades math ed majors
Baylor students may major in secondary or middle-grades mathematics education, and math majors in the College of Arts & Sciences may minor in education and benefit from the extensive faculty- and mentor-guided field work in the SOE.
“To teach in the middle grades, you have to have a specialty. I think it’s incredibly important I’m specifically a math education major. There are many specific strategies and activities that we discuss in content courses that I would not be equipped with if I hadn’t been as specific as a math major. We have the time to focus on math.”
— Leslie, middle grades math major
- Gae Connally, lecturer in Curriculum & Instruction with 35 years of experience in public school teaching
- Shelby, elementary education major
Baylor's elementary education majors experience at least five semesters of field work in local schools, guided by Baylor faculty and in-classroom professional mentor teachers.
“In order to be the kind of teacher I want to be, which is loving and caring and intentional about the way I teach my students, I needed to be somewhere [that they] would treat me that way, and I knew Baylor is that kind of program.”
— Shelby, elementary education major
